Hellenic Public Properties Company (HPPC S.A.) announces the reopening of the Achilleion Museum for this year’s summer season, from June 1 to September 30, 2022. Due to ongoing restoration works, visitors will only have access to the outdoor – open areas of the Museum, where they can stroll through and enjoy the Imperial Gardens with a special reduced admission fee.

At the same time, the complex project for the protection, promotion, and restoration of the historic Achilleion continues. This project is implemented by HPPC with funding from the NSRF, in collaboration with the Ministry of Culture and the Region of the Ionian Islands. Currently, restoration, maintenance, reconstruction, and modernization works are being carried out in the four main buildings of the iconic complex (the Palace, the Baron’s Building, the Barracks, and the Gatehouse), as well as in the immediate surrounding area. Additionally, the restoration of the buildings’ decorative painting and the conservation of sculptures and other artworks are being conducted by the Department of Conservation (DSANM) of the Ministry of Culture.

All works are carried out according to approved studies, technical specifications, and methodology, under the close supervision of HPPC and the Ministry of Culture. The goal is the protection of the monument and its findings and the restoration of the structural integrity of the buildings, through repair and reinforcement, in accordance with the principles of restoration and with respect for the heritage value of the site.

As a result of these works, by 2023 visitors will be able to admire the restored statues in the unique Imperial Gardens of the Palace. It is also worth noting that during the restoration works, remarkable new findings emerged related to the decorative painting on the ceilings and walls of the Achilleion Palace. The goal is now to showcase this decoration to the public through appropriate museum installations. The increase in the Ministry of Culture’s collection due to these new findings, compared to the originally planned scope, and the sequence of conservation and promotion works carried out by the project contractor, allow the Museum to operate and welcome visitors in the Imperial Gardens from June 1 to September 30.

At the same time, HPPC is coordinating all necessary actions (studies, horticultural works, etc.) for the restoration of the entire forest area, so that it may eventually become a visitable space of significant historical value.
